La Fábrica

Sant Just Desvern

The home of Bofill Taller de Arquitectura is also the clearest expression of the group's methodology. La Fábrica is both the place where the Taller works and a model for how it works. As an exercise in building, it demonstrates that architecture is temporal, that its uses can shift over time, and that its meanings are always contingent. La Fábrica is a structure under perpetual renovation, and the work produced within it reflects this.

Transformation begins with the decision to preserve rather than erase the industrial past of an abandoned cement factory outside Barcelona. Existing concrete silos, tunnels and raw structural shells are retained and reorganised to house studios, offices, archives and generous planted courtyards. The project grows gradually over time, with each intervention layered onto what came before, creating a dialogue between inherited forms and new uses. Interior spaces maintain the mass and texture of the original factory, while exterior gardens soften the industrial framework, allowing vegetation to climb, anchor and redefine the atmosphere. The result is a living environment that treats architecture as a continuous process of adaptation, where past purpose and contemporary life coexist.
